The Apple and the Fire

by Dionysos Maskaleris

When the world was young and I was already old I loved you

for you are higher than the angels and you will always be my children.

I passed my hand over your unseeing eyes and you descended the trees.

My lost friend who once sat at my left side

gave you the apple and the fire.

Out of the apple you have made poisoning foods and life forces.

Out of the fire you created terrible tools and bursting suns.

Now in this time that you destroy your bodies and the Earth

you search for sustenance and meaning.

Remember your body is a temple and the Earth is a threshold of heaven.

Though I molded the apple just as I molded your desires

you chose to leave Eden just as you can choose to return.

“The virtue of Angels is they cannot deteriorate;

their flaw is they cannot improve.

A Human Being’s flaw is that we can deteriorate;

our virtue is that we can improve”. -Hasidic saying
